The Dean of Students Office will be hosting free virtual events in place of the career fair and career week activities. This new approach allows students to receive professional resources they need through a different platform while practicing social distancing and remote learning.

Mallory Safely, assistant director for Career and Professional Development, has created a resume book on Purple Briefcase to help students regain the opportunity to connect with potential employers.

“This a very difficult time, but it is temporary, and we want our students to know we are not abandoning them,” Safely said. “Student Life will continue to support our students virtually and prepare them for the next steps they take after graduation.”

Students should submit resumes to the resume book by Friday, April 10 to be included. To access the resume book, go to Purple Briefcase and log in or create an account. Once you have created a profile, click on my jobs to access the resume book and hit apply.

Virtual career events will be held every week for the next three weeks on Microsoft Teams to continue to help students develop the best professional skills. Microsoft Teams is available to every student through Microsoft 365.

Safely will host the first virtual presentation, Elevator Pitch 101, on Thursday, March 26 at 11 a.m. Students will learn how to give a professional handshake and develop a short presentation about themselves also known as an elevator pitch. This six-part series will also cover topics like marketing yourself, building your resume and the dos and don’ts of a job interview.

Other presentations include:

• Social Media and Your Professional Development, Tuesday, March 31 at 10 a.m.
• Finding Your Path and Starting Your Job Search, Thursday, April 2 at 10 a.m.
• Resumes 101, Tuesday, April 7 at 11 a.m.
• Interviewing 101, Thursday, April 9 at 11 a.m.
• Salary Negotiation: Knowing Your Worth, Tuesday, April 14 at 1 p.m.

During each live presentation, students will be able to ask questions in real time by using the chat feature on Microsoft Teams, said Safely. If a student misses the event, they will still have access to the recorded presentation.

“The faculty and staff in student services are having to adapt to this new normal,” she said. “We are doing everything in our power to train ourselves in new ways to network and assist our students. As we learn new things, we will be able to provide even more resources and opportunities for our students to succeed.”
